The First EPC Treebank Training School: Annotating Earlier and Classical Egyptian Texts provides postgraduate students with the opportunity to learn how to annotate Egyptian texts within the EPC Treebank using the Universal Dependencies framework.

Initiated in March 2024, the EPC Treebank currently contains 3,089 sentences and 34,234 tokens drawn from the Pyramid Texts (see UD release 2.18 at https://github.com/UniversalDependencies/UD_Egyptian-PC/tree/dev). This marks the first morphosyntactic treebank for Egyptian texts capable of supporting the development of natural language processing tools for the language, such as GrewPT (https://grew.fr/grew_match/pt/) and the EPC parser (https://web.ujaen.es/investiga/nile-in-contact/Analizador_es.html).

The primary aim of the training school is to incorporate new texts into the database. While this inaugural edition will focus on annotating Earlier and Classical Egyptian texts, subsequent editions will expand to include Late Egyptian and Demotic texts.

The programme is divided into a theoretical and a practical component, each lasting 10 hours:

Theoretical Component: Five two-hour online lectures covering the use and methodology of the EPC Treebank.

Practical Component: Five two-hour online sessions in which trainees will annotate their chosen texts within the Treebank under the supervision of a trainer.

All trainees will be formally credited as annotators on the EPC Treebank website. Upon completion of the training school, participants will receive a certificate detailing the specific text they have annotated.

Admission to the training school is subject to a selection process. Applicants are required to submit a CV alongside a statement of motivation (maximum 500 words) proposing a text they wish to annotate. Applications should be submitted to radiaz@ujaen.es between 25 May and 30 June. Successful candidates will be notified by email by mid-July 2026.

The First EPC Treebank Training School has the following core objectives:

1) Train postgraduate students to annotate Egyptian texts in accordance with the Universal Dependencies guidelines.

2) Expand the Egyptian corpus within the EPC Treebank.

3) Equip students with the skills to utilise the EPC Treebank for the study of Egyptian grammar.

4) Introduce trainees to the development of natural language processing (NLP) tools for the Egyptian language.

Postgraduate students who have an excellent background in reading and analysing Earlier and Classical Egyptian texts.

Applicants are required to submit a CV and a motivation letter of no more than 500 words, proposing a text that they would like to annotate in the treebank. Applications should be submitted to radiaz@ujaen.es between 25 May and 30 June. Acceptance emails will be sent by mid-July 2026.

Session 1 (1 September, 2 hours): Introduction to Universal Dependencies and the EPC Treebank. Overview of the training school programme. Transcription of Earlier and Classical Egyptian texts and metadata for sentences annotated in the EPC Treebank.

Session 2 (2 September, 2 hours): Universal parts of speech and morphological features.

Session 3 (3 September, 2 hours): Dependency relations.

Session 4 (4 September, 2 hours): Practical demonstration: Annotating a text in the EPC Treebank.

Session 5 (7 September, 2 hours): Text annotation using a multi-annotator application.

Session 6 (8 September, 2 hours): Text annotation using a multi-annotator application.

Session 7 (9 September, 2 hours): Text annotation using a multi-annotator application.

Session 8 (10 September, 2 hours): Text annotation using a multi-annotator application.

Session 9 (11 September, 2 hours): Wrap-up and discussion of future work.
